GPS Land Navigation
This course provides the skills necessary to navigate and operate effectively in the field day or night using a map and GPS.
This course is conducted over 6 hours of classroom and practical field application.
There are no prerequisites required for this class.
This class will target the following topic areas:
Types of maps
Scales of maps
Grid reference information
Topographic map symbols
Adjoining sheet information
Reading terrain on a map
Reading coordinates (UTM, MGRS, Geographic Coordinates)
Night travel consideratio
GPS set up and use
Inauguration of a GPS with a map
During the practical field training exercises, students will actively utilize all information taught during the classroom portion. In the field, students will need locate their next point using coordinates that are provided to them and navigate to that point using only their GPS.
By the end of the course, students will have located (at a minimum) 6 different points
For SAR personnel the final practical training exercise can be conducted as a SAR Training Scenario if requested three weeks in advance.
The cost of the course will be $140.00 per student.
There are no prerequisites.
Registration: There is a non-refundable registration fee of $40.00 due upon registration. Registration can be paid by emailing us your credit card information or calling Alaska Search Rescue and Survival Training, LLC with credit card information. The remaining $100.00 can be paid by the first day of class.
